Evaluation

1. How are you using media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

In my process of research of comparative texts of an opening sequence I used the Internet to search for texts similar to Scream for this I used a useful website called Tastekid.

I have also used YouTube and Google videos to view opening sequences of various films as research, to see what I could use and what I could adopt into my own opening sequence. Looking at opening sequences of other films allowed me to see how different styles of editing are still effective.

During my planning stage I used a camera to go out and take stills for my storyboard as I’m not a good drawer and images are more clear and realistic.
In post-production I used Adobe Premiere to edit all the filming.

In Adobe Premiere initially I cut sections of a clip and dragged it into the time line to get all the scenes in order. After getting everything in order I set out to change the contrast and darkness of the scenes that took place indoors as the lighting was too bright and we couldn’t adjust the lighting during filming. I then set out to add transitions and decreasing the speed of a scene by simply right clicking on the scene selected and clicking on speed and adjusting to however you desire. The sound was my next task, with the same method of selecting and dragging the audio clip to the time line. If the clip was longer than I wanted it to be, I cut it to adjust it and dragged it into the place I wanted. The stabbing scene took a lot of attention and time on the sound as I had to cut the sound various times and copy the same audio clip and cut again in a different and repeat many times in order to get the desired sound and effect . During post-production I have also used Photoshop to create a film production logo which we decided to name “Monsoon Films”.

In Photoshop I used the magic wand to get rid of the background and also used free transform to change the size of the image. I also used Photoshop to create the Title of the opening sequence “Wrath” by utilising the magic wand and by inverting the colour scheme.
As research for my ancillary tasks I have used Google images and Empire magazine’s online version.

Looking at professional posters and reviews I have been able to notice certain patterns that they have and adopt them into my ancillary tasks.
For my Presentations I have used Microsoft PowerPoint and in order to upload these PowerPoint presentations unto my blog I have used slideshare, an easy way to upload presentations by embedding the link onto blogger and simply posting it.

2. In what ways will your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

As part of my research and planning i looked at the opening sequence of Scream and from that i have taken ideologies and representations and adopted them in my opening sequence.
In the opening sequence of Scream i noticed that the main protagonist seemed to be male, as the voice gave it away, however in my opening sequence i tried to hide away the gender of the main protagonist (the killer) in a way to avoid stereotypes and make it different. I did this in order to give my opening sequence a different edge and also to give the audience something they can dwell upon when watching, they will have a mystery on their mind and this will make them want to watch more in order to be able to decipher the mystery. However, i have followed the stereotypical female victim, which we see in Scream, as i didn’t want to make it extremely different and this also allows my opening sequence to have a generic convention of a horror movie, as most horror movies have a female victim.
From the opening scene of Scream i noticed that it followed Todorov’s narrative theory. There is an initial equilibrium, that then gets interrupted by a disruption, this disruption is then resolved, restoring an order and finally creating a new equilibrium. My sequence also abides by Todorov’s theory, giving it a professional feel.
My opening sequence demonstrates conventions of the genre of horror as i have included appropriate mise-en-scene such as a knife, blood, and a mask, also the costume of the killer can be seen as a representation and stereotype of a hooded gang member, thus giving a negative representation of London, that it may not be very safe. This costume also supports the stereotype that hooded figures are dangerous, this however was not my intention, as i just wanted to hide the persons gender, however, this may even turn the opening sequence scarier as it deals and shows some people’s fears, thus becoming another generic convention of a horror movie, that they purposely use people’s fears and include them in the film to get you scared.
My ancillary tasks relate to professional posters and film reviews as i have done my research and i have followed the layout techniques that i noticed, for example: posters have small text including the names of people that star in the movie and the production team included, i have made sure that i included this in my poster. Another thing that i have included is a small phrase, which i have observed in two posters that i have looked at, the poster of Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street. The Film review that I have created also has similar layouts to the ones that I have researched, for example, Filmstar

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

In the process of post-production I had the feedback of my partner, as I was the editor and she sat next to me giving me feedback on what I did and what she thought I should change. We used this method as to always have someone else’s opinion on what you are doing, so it isn’t just viewed by one person’s perspective and so it can appeal better to our target audience. I also asked for the opinion of my teacher and he gave us feedback that we should increase the non-diegetic sound and decrease the diegetic sound of a particular scene, and I did so. Another way that I modified the opening sequence was by adding a split screen as another media student told me that the scene dragged on and I didn’t want this to happen, so by adding a split screen I kept both scenes and it no longer dragged on. This was an important modification as the feedback allowed us to improve our opening sequence, to appeal more to the target audience, as the student that gave us feedback is in our target audience range. After completing the post-production I noticed that our main task ran for over 5 minutes and should be between 3-5 minutes, as a consequence of this I had to go back and delete some scenes that we didn’t necessarily need, after some amendments I cut it down to around 3-4 minutes, my partner and I were both happy with the results and left it at that.

I also received feedback for my ancillary tasks and I made a few changes to my poster, by shrinking the size of the text, making it look more professional. I also added more text to my film poster as some feedback that I got was that there wasn’t enough text, so by adding more text I have appealed more to my target audience.

4. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

The combination of my main product and my ancillary tasks are very effective, I believe. I have made sure that I include generic conventions of horror in all three of my tasks, for example: in my main task the killer wears a mask and uses a knife to kill his victims brutally, in the first ancillary I have chosen an image with the killer wearing the mask, making sure the target audience knows what genre the film is about and also in the second ancillary I have chosen two images that are seen as horror (an image of a dead woman on the floor with blood all over her and an image of the killer wearing the mask and holding the knife in his hand). Having generic conventions of horror in all my products allows the audience to not get confused as to which genre what each task is, I have made it clear that the genre throughout every task is horror. In all three tasks I have tried my hardest to make them look as professional as I can, looking at professional products and adapting some of their layouts into my tasks, therefore making them all look professional which would appeal to the target audience.

Final Film Review

This is my final copy of my Film review.
I have included a little box with ratings and some information from the film, adopting this method from the review from Filmstar and i have also included more images to balance out the text and so that i can cater for the readers that like to read and also see the images.

Ancillary 2 - Fim review

I have been looking at film reviews and have found 2 that caught my attention.

This review of avatar found in Cineworld's Unlimited magazine caught my attention as it doesn't have much text at all but includes many images. I found this interesting and also discovered that many people prefer it this way as they just like looking at the images, and would rather not have that much to read.

This review of The Ugly Truth from Filmstar has taken a different approach and they have balanced out the amount of text they have with a larger image. They also have a little box with a star rating and some information about the film. I find this to be a simple layout yet effective as there is a fair amount of text and a nice large image.

Final Poster

Having worked on my poster, i have brought everything together and this is my final product.

Poster

Poster - preparation

As preparation for my poster i have selected some pictures that i would like to use.
These are my options:

I picked these out as they fit the genre of horror and link with our opening sequence. They are also dark and contain some mystery to it and also includes the objects that inflict fear.

i have decided to pick the second image and in order to create more mystery and darkness i have darkened it.

Looking over at the picture at including it into a poster i have found that i'm not happy with the effect and have used Photoshop to change the image. I have darkened some of the image and highlighted others to give it a black and white contrast. I have also used magic wand to select the eyes and invert one of them into the eyes slot as i thought the eyes would add some sense of reality into the image.
This is final image for my poster:

Ancillary task 1

I've been looking at posters of horror films to carry on the horror genre.

I've taken a look on the poster for scream 4, as it ties into what our film is about. I've noticed the poster is mainly black and it doesn't contain many colours, just white and red, this makes it simple but still effective. I've been thinking of following this rule and only having 3 colours in my poster as it is simple yet effective.

I have also looked at the poster for "Nightmare on Elm street", it has various shades of red and brown and also has black. It has a sombre feel, therefore fitting to the genre of horror. The image itself is also quite creepy and scary, the face of the subject is also hidden with a hat .

I've realised that both these posters have a small phrase on the poster, that can include some fear therefore fitting into the genre of horror, i shall also adopt this method and add a phrase into my poster.

Post-Production

I was the designated editor as my strongest point is editing, however i wanted my partner to be there while i was editing so i could have a different viewpoint other than mine.

As we viewed what we had filmed we realised there was a few scenes that we had to re-shoot because of lighting or simply because they didn't look right, however we were mostly proud of what we had shot.
Having to use Adobe Premiere was something i didn't enjoy very much as it can be complicated and also because i was used to using Final Cut Pro, However, i managed to get used to it and learnt a lot.

The form of editing that i did was linear, following a sequence of events, which made things easier for me. Editing followed a couple of simple steps, simply dragging the clip that you've cut into the timeline and carry on doing so for the rest of the editing process. Also having to render the sequence after.

After getting all the clips into order i set off adding transitions and filters. Adding transitions wasn't hard at all, although finding transitions that suit the genre of horror proved quite difficult and we decided to stick with straight cuts and occasionally fade to black, which worked well. As cause of the lighting in the interior of the house i had to darken every scene from the house, which was time consuming and also made the software run a bit slower.

While watching what i had edited we realised that the sequence was too long and we had to cut out some footage in order to keep in the 3 minute range. The stabbing scene is the most important scene and we wanted it to impact the audience so we thought it would be a good idea to slow it down so the scene is elongated and creates more tension.

The sound was quite problematic, we didn't have many resources as to sound effects as they were more for comic and sci-fi films, so we had to re use a few tracks. Also as we had no time left we couldn't record the voice of the killer so were asked our teacher for advice and he told us that the audience would understand so we didn't include the voice of the killer, which was a shame.

We had good audience feedback, some people were genuinely scared, although there is a scene in the sequence were people find some humour, which wasn't intended.

Things i would do or change if i had the chance to do again, i would take more time to edit and allow more time to focus on the sound and also have some time in the beginning to get used to the software.

The opening sequence, will be exhibited on YouTube which is popular among young people, it's on the internet which is global  and also follows a mainstream genre and it is free which makes it easy to distribute.
I think my partner and i worked very well together, we both discussed the things that needed to be done and also the things we have to change and we always came to an agreement.
I believe i did a good role as the killer, i maintained my character in role and made sure to try and act like a killer, lurking around.

If i was to do it again, i would choose to do it with my partner as we have good communication and good co-operation. I would also make sure to manage my time better and to try and get things done as soon possible and always make sure that we have back up actors and actresses that we can count on.

Production

During our production we had to think better about some scenes that we had planned for example we had to change a scene completely as a consequence of the lighting at the time and place.
The lighting outside wasn't much of a problem as the time in which we chose to film was a good time of the day where there was enough light to see what was happening and it wasn't too light in which we couldn't create the effect of eeriness.

Cinematography
The camera work went well, we had to discuss the various shots we wanted to do and be creative in order to include a good amount of different shots so it wouldn't be boring and be the same thing.

Mise-en-scene
We decided to include a mask and a knife as it's a horror film and we wanted to inflict fear. We decided to give the killer a black tracksuit and a black hoodie with the drawing of headphones on the front, in order to sort of disguise the gender of the killer and the face. The headphones adding an edge to the movie as the the headphones are a device which captures his victims screams. We dressed the Victim in comfortable, homely clothes, giving the feel of a calm day.

Sound/dialogue
As we were filming we thought maybe the sound wouldn't come out properly and we wouldn't be able to hear it clearly but we decided to go with it and if we did need to record the sound again, we coudl do so at a later stage.

We had a problem with the tape, the tape had to be stripped and as a consequence we had to film all we had filmed again, taking up a lot of time and also cutting back time for our editing stage.

Generic conventions

The genre of our sequence is Horror/thriller. The genre conventions that show this are:

  • The Killers mask -  which inflicts uneasiness and fear
  • The Knife - Also inflicts fear
  • The Female victim
  • The Male victim
  • Eerie sounds in the background
  • Time of day it is set in. (dark)
We also follow some codes and conventions of horror such as:
  • Causes fear and panic
  • Causes dread and alarm
  • The killer has a characteristic trademark for example the people he kills, the mask and the knife.

Representations
The use of the mask and knife is a form of representation from the killer from "Scream", we wanted to adapt the killer so he wouldn't be exactly the same, therefore we choose a scary looking mask and a small knife that can easily be concealed.

We represented London as a quiet place but a place that isn't completely safe, a place where you should always be aware of your surroundings.

Todorov's narrative theory ties in well with our film opening sequence.

At the start there is a state of equilibrium (the way it should be) , the victim is at home watching TV and eating something.
Further into the sequence there is a disruption, the phone rings and the victim starts to feel uneasy.
The victim recognises the disruption and tries to repair the damage of the disruption by hanging up the phone and running away from the killer.
Finally a new equilibrium is made, the victim is dead and everything is now calm.
Our opening sequence follows a formulaic structure. It has stereotypical characters and follows the norm in a horror movie.
Following the norm, the victim is female and gets killed in the end, also the killer is male and is the more powerful character as he takes charge of the situation and is the one that kills the female.
If we wanted to subvert our opening sequence we would have made the victim a male and the killer a female.
This is the storyboard we came up with. I've had to split it into two parts.

Part 2...

Comparative texts

Due to changing partners at a later stage, the idea we decided to stick with was my partners. She looked at Scream so I took a look at it.

The opening sequence of scream begins with the name of the film production, "Dimension films". Followed by the tittle "Scream". The name giving the audience a clue about what to expect in the movie, the red shadow around the word may also symbolise blood, further emphasizing the genre of horror.

At the start of the opening sequence there is a close up of a phone, which links from the title as we hear a phone ring in the title. We see a girl "Drew Barrymore" in the comfort of her own home, alone picking up the phone and having what seems like a nice conversation on the phone to a stranger, meanwhile putting a pack of popcorn on the stove. The mood of the conversation changes and Drew suddenly becomes scared and begins to run around the house making sure all all the doors and windows are locked. The killer plays mind games with the Drew and leaves her terrified. The killer ties her boyfriend up and tells her he wants to play a game, they then play a question game on horror movies, she gets some right but gets some incorrect. The killer kills her boyfriend and comes after her. Chasing after her, creating even more tension he stabs her in the chest, but she still gets up and she tries to call out to her parents that are just arriving but her voice can't be heard and the killer kills her. He then hangs her body up in a tree, leaving her there for her parents to find her.

Throughout the movie the voice of the killer is very important as he has a very creepy, deep voice and quickly gets infuriated each time she hangs up the call. The tension in this opening sequence is slowly built up, using diegetic and non-diegetic sound and also camera movement.
